Description

Domain of One’s Own (DoOO) is a service allows faculty and students working on academic projects for class, research, or e-portfolios to claim a free domain name (web address) and start building their own unique website.

Students may use Domain of One’s Own for a course, program, or academic project as long as they have a faculty or staff sponsor. The sponsor needs to confirm the project and be added to the site as a User.

You can use such apps as WordPress, Omeka, and Scalar to create your own website. There are 3 areas our Domain of One’s Own initiative will focus on:

  • WEB LITERACY:
    • Master the tools and technology that make up the web to build your own space online.
  • DIGITAL IDENTITY:
    • Explore the notion of digital identity and how publishing on the web can frame an identity.
  • RECLAIM:
    • Learn to take ownership and control over the content you put on the web instead of handing it to third-party publishers.

Faculty are encouraged to create a domain both for their own professional use and for the use of public course projects. Domains are not a replacement for Moodle but are rather intended to create space for faculty to:

  • Collaborate with students on a digital course and/or research projects.
  • Develop data visualization projects or blogs.
  • Showcase your own research and teaching activities.
  • Curate your professional online presence.
  • Have your students develop e-portfolios.
  • Design a landing page for your academic conference or event.

Getting Started: Submit Interest Form Request

  1. Go to domains.swarthmore.edu.
  2. Click the Get Started Button.
  3. You will be redirected to login for verification. Use your Swarthmore username and password to log in.
  4. If you don’t already have a Domain of One’s account, you’ll be prompted to fill out our interest request form. The form will prompt you to let us know more about your project. Currently, students are only able to use DoOO when it's for a class, program, or if they have a faculty/staff sponsor.
  5. After you submit the interest form, a support ticket for your request will be made. You’ll then receive a follow up email from ITS about how to proceed next.

Next Steps

Once you receive an approval email from ITS, visit the help pages for Swarthmore's Domain of One's Own for instructions on selecting a domain name, installing applications, and accessing your site.
