The Language Center is a dynamic and flexible learning space that supports digital initiatives and encourages technological exploration. Our mission is to provide a wide range of technological and traditional resources to enhance and promote the study of foreign language, literature, film, media, arts and culture at Swarthmore College. These resources support a wide array of disciplines at Swarthmore and enhance College goals directed at preparing students for engaging and contributing to a diverse and global environment. The Language Center is a dynamic and flexible learning space that supports digital initiatives and encourages technological exploration. Our mission is to provide a wide range of technological and traditional resources to enhance and promote the study of foreign language, literature, film, media, arts and culture at Swarthmore College. These resources support a wide array of disciplines at Swarthmore and enhance College goals directed at preparing students for engaging and contributing to a diverse and global environment. Where is the Language Center located?
We are located on the third floor in Kohlberg Hall room 326. Our Video Viewing Room is located in Kohlberg Hall room 332.
When is it open?
Please check the Language Center website for our hours. Up to date hours and closings are available on The Dash.
How do I access the space?
Drop by Kohlberg 326 during our open hours. A building elevator is available to those with multi-level accessibility needs. The Language Center can also be reserved for class sessions, workshops and events on Swat Central.
The Video Viewing Room can be reserved on Swat Central, but is also available for drop-in access upon availability. A Language Center student assistant will scan you into the room. Stop by our front desk and ask for assistance.
What services are available?
Services for Language Faculty
- Orientations to teach students how to use software programs required for their courses.
- Workshops on integrating technology into the foreign language curriculum.
- Digitizing and streaming of films and audio recordings for more widespread use.
- Exploration of Virtual Reality based applications supplemental to language learning activities and/or for course use.
- Tutorials and presentations on our Podcast Studio and audio recording resources.
Services for Language Students
- Digital access to audio and video material required for foreign language classes.
- Technical support for input and browsing of non-Western languages.
- Software programs required for language courses.
- Digital video cameras for use in creating multi-media projects.
- Virtual Reality access through weekly drop-in sessions.
- B&W printing for course work.
What is available for loan?
We maintain a large collection of international DVD films related to the Modern Languages and Literatures and Spanish departments. Stop in and ask our Language Center student assistant to browse the collection or locate films online via Tripod.
