Tri-Co Students
Setting Up Your Swarthmore Account
Swarthmore accounts are only active for the semester in which a Tri-Co student is enrolled in a class. At the end of the semester (when the Registrar rolls the term), the Swarthmore account is deactivated. Tri-Co students will need to go through the Claim Your Identity process each semester that they take classes at Swarthmore.
Tri-Co students taking classes at Swarthmore will be provided with a Swarthmore account which can be used to log into Moodle, Google Workspace, SwatVPN, campus computers, and any other academic services. Some resources (like Moodle) will not be available right away. After activating your Swarthmore account by claiming your identity, wait 12-24 hours before logging into Swarthmore Moodle.
After registering for a course, Tri-Co students will receive an email containing their Swarthmore username. Use the student ID number from your home institution to set up your Swarthmore account.
- Visit password.swarthmore.edu and click the Claim Your Identity link at the bottom of the login screen.
- You will see a Welcome screen, click Next.
- Enter the username and employee or student ID number provided to you by the college. Click Submit.
- You will be asked to review and agree to the Swarthmore College Acceptable Use Policy. A link will be provided for review. Once done, check the box to agree to the terms and click Next.
- Enter at least one recovery option, but both are recommended. After you enter the option(s), click Update. The options include:
- A non-Swarthmore email address
- A non-Swarthmore mobile phone number
- Set up your Duo 2-factor authentication device registration. You will be walked through the Duo set up process depending on the device type you chose.
- You will need to install the Duo Mobile app to complete device registration. Contact the Help Desk if you are not able to install the Duo Mobile app.
- You will be asked to enter a password. When you click into the text field, the requirements for setting a password at Swarthmore will show as a dropdown window below the text field. As you fulfill the requirements, they will automatically be checked on the list. Once you have a password that passes the checklist, re-enter it in the field below to confirm it. Click Next.
- At any time you can click on the eye icon on the right-hand side of the text fields to see the password.
- View our page on tips for creating strong passwords.
- You will see a confirmation screen that you have completed the process to claim your account. Click Complete.
Once you have set up your account - if you need help with resetting your password, or if you have forgotten your password, visit our page on resetting email and network passwords.
Duo at Swarthmore
Tri-Co students are automatically enrolled in Duo at Swarthmore. Duo device registration is part of the Claim Your Account process. You will be prompted to enroll your device before you set up your Swarthmore password. If you need to make changes to your Duo account see our page on Duo Two Factor authentication.
Note that hardware tokens that produce single-use numerical codes for authentication are institution-specific, so you cannot use the hardware token from your home institution here at Swarthmore. If you need to use a hardware token, you would need to acquire one from the Help Desk. You will always be able to add your Swarthmore account to the Duo mobile app, which can also produce single-use numerical codes - with or without Wi-Fi or cell service.
