"Friendly Name" URLs

When a new page is created, Drupal uses the value of that page's Title and transforms it into a URL using the following rules:

  • all spaces are replaced with dashes

  • all words are lower case

  • some special characters may be removed

Example: A page, located within the "Admissions & Aid" site, with the title, "Apply to Swarthmore," would have an auto-generated url of https://www.swarthmore.edu/admissions-aid/apply-to-swarthmore.

Occasionally, a site owner may wish to use a shorter URL than the one auto-generated by Drupal. These types of URLs, sometimes referred to as "friendly name" URLs, can be useful for pages with lengthy titles, or if the URL needs to appear in print. Building upon the previous example, the owner of "Apply to Swarthmore" may prefer the URL https://www.swarthmore.edu/apply. In order to configure a "friendly name" URL, please contact support@swarthmore.edu with a detailed description of the request.
