How to install and use Swarthmore's VPN system

The Cisco Virtual Private Network (VPN) client is the only way to connect to to Swarthmore  network network resources such as shared network drives, shared software using keyaccessusing KeyAccess, and Banner from off-campus. Note:

How to install Swarthmore's VPN system

  1. Open a web browser, such as Firefox or Safari (highly recommend Firefox)
  2. Go to http://swatvpn.swarthmore.edu
  3. Log in using your Swarthmore user name and password
  4. Wait while it checks for java Java (may take a minute or so)
  5. If java Java detection fails, you will be directed to download and install VPN
  6. Click the AnyConnect VPN link to download and save file to your computer
  7. Go to the installer that downloaded to your computer, and double-click on it to install

How to connect to VPN

macOS or Windows Computer

Search for and launch the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client.

  • On a Mac: Open the Applications folder, click on the Cisco folder and select the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client.
  • On Windows: Click on Start, Programs, Cisco, and select the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client.
    By using VPN, you can connect to college servers as if you were on campus (see examples below).

iPad/iPhone

  1. Open the App Store
  2. Select Search
  3. In the Search Box, enter "anyconnect" and tap Cisco Anyconnect in the suggestions list
  4. Tap AnyConnect
  5. Tap Free, then INSTALL APP
  6. Select Install
  7. Tap AnyConnect icon on the iPad/iPhone home screen
  8. Choose OK to enable AnyConnect
  9. Select Connections from the AnyConnect home screen
  10. Select Add VPN Connection
  11. Tap Description, and enter SwatVPN
  12. Tap Server Address, and enter swatvpn.swarthmore.edu
  13. Tap Save
  14. To connect via VPN, after you connect to Wifi, go to the AnyConnect home screen
  15. Select SwatVPN, tap ON next AnyConnect VPN
  16. Log in using your Swarthmore username and password  
  17. Tap Connect
  18. After clicking Connect, a second window will appear for you to enter your authentication information. There will be three text fields labeled Username (not your full email address), Password, and Duo Option where you will enter your information. The block of text immediately below will explain how you use the Duo Option field, in case you ever need a reminder.

  1. Go to the Google Play store and install AnyConnect by Cisco Systems, Inc
    • For Kindle devices, from the Amazon Kindle app store
  2. After install, tap the AnyConnect Icon to start the AnyConnect app
  3. Accept the End User License Agreement (EULA)
  4. Click OK to continue

  5. Tap Connection > Add New VPN Connection to configure

  6. Choose Description, and enter SwatVPN

  7. Choose Server Address, and enter swatvpn.swarthmore.edu

  8. Tap Done

  9. To connect via VPN, after you connect to Wifi, go to the AnyConnect home window

  10. Tap Connection, and choose SwatVPN

  11. Log in using your Swarthmore username and password

  12. If prompted, tap Connect

Chromebook

  1. Go to the Chrome Web Store (click Web Store icon on Google Chromebook desktop)
  2. Search for Cisco AnyConnect
  3. Click Add to Chrome button to install
    • if prompted to confirm new app, click Add
  4. Once installed, the AnyConnect icon will appear on your application screen - double-click icon to configure VPN
  5. Wait while client initializes - may take 2-3 minutes
  6. Once available, click Add New Connection button
  7. For Name, enter SwatVPN
  8. For Server Address, enter swatvpn.swarthmore.edu
  9. Click Save Changes to continue
  10. To connect via VPN, right-click the "Wifi" icon in the bottom-right taskbar
  11. Select VPN from menu
  12. Select SwatVPN from under Cisco AnyConnect
  13. Log in using your Swarthmore Username and Password .  If prompted to accept security certificate, click Import and Continue. Otherwise, click Accept.
  14. After clicking Connect, a second window will appear for you to enter your authentication information. There will be three text fields labeled Username (not your full email address), Password, and Duo Option where you will enter your information.
