Description

ArcGIS is the industry standard Geographic Information System (GIS) software.  It can be installed on college-owned computers by faculty and staff.

Student access

ArcGIS is installed on all public Windows machines to be available for student use. We recommend using the Windows computer classroom (Trotter 201), which is open for general use when there is not a class in session, or the Windows computers in the Beardsley Media Center, which have more RAM, and larger screens.

Faculty may also acquire one-year stand-alone licenses for students in their classes from ESRI through a separate request process. Please contact the Help Desk for details.

Training

On-line training courses from ESRI are available for free through our site license. In order to take one, a code needs to be generated for you and/or your students. Please contact ITS for more information.

Installation Instructions

For most installations download the installer (link below), then Run as Administrator.

Installation for on-campus use

The ArcGIS License Manager is required to use this software. Users must be on-campus or connected to VPN when off campus.

  1. After installation, open the ArcGIS Administrator application from the Start menu.
  2. Click Yes to allow it to make changes to your computer.
  3. Select the Desktop icon on the left side window.
  4. Click the level of ArcGIS (Advanced, Standard, Basic) that you need for your use. Be sure to select Concurrent Use versions, unless you have been given your own stand-alone license code (in which case, see below).
  5. Under License Manager, click Change and type in "acadprint.garnet.swarthmore.edu" (without the quotes), then click OK.
  6. Click Apply, then click OK to start using ArcGIS.

Installation for users requiring offline access

See Academic Technologist Doug Willen (willen@swarthmore.edu, x7787) for a stand-alone, one year license, that will not need to be on the network to be used.  This setup will require both your Esri Client Provisioning File (.prvc) and a network connection during the initial authorization and licensing with ESRI.

Be sure to select Single Use versions, unless you have been given your own stand-alone license code (in which case, see below).
  5. Start the authorization process by clicking the "Authorize Now" button. This will open a new window.
  6. In the Authorization Wizard, Select "I have received an authorization file and am now ready to finish the authorization process."
  7. Browse for the file that was provided to you, then click Next.
  8. Select "Authorize with Esri now using the Internet."
  9. Complete the authorization as directed.
  10. Back in the ArcGIS Administrator, click the Availability icon under the Desktop icon on the left side, and make sure you have access to all of the components you need.
  11. Click Apply, then click OK to start using ArcGIS
