New Duo Universal Prompt

As of Wednesday, July 27th the Duo prompt you see when logging in to Swarthmore services has been updated with the new Universal Prompt. Some options will be moving or changing and the Duo documentation has been updated to reflect all changes.

Enrolling Your First Device

You will be prompted to enroll a device the first time you log in to your Swarthmore account. You will need a laptop or desktop computer in addition to the desired device you wish to use for Duo authentication. Registering TouchID on a Mac laptop will not require an additional device. (For Apple ID users, please ensure you have your Apple ID password available - you may need it to confirm the download of the Duo mobile app.)

You can follow Duo’s official step-by-step instructions on device enrollment for assistance with the process.

*Note: Make sure your browser meets the minimum requirements for the device(s) you wish to enroll by checking out Duo’s list of supported browsers.

Managing Devices

Enrolling Additional Devices

We strongly recommend that you have at least two devices registered with Duo. However, you can have as many as you feel you need - including having multiple devices of the same type.

  1. On the Duo prompt page, click “Other options”.
  2. Click the “Manage devices” option at the bottom of your device list.
  3. You will be asked to authenticate using a device you already have registered with Duo.
  4. Click the “Add a device” box.
  5. Choose the device type you wish to add - follow the below instructions for each type.
    1. TouchID
    2. Duo Mobile
    3. Security key
    4. Phone number
  6. When you are done adding devices, click the “Back to login” link at the top-right corner of the page.

Reactivating Duo Mobile

If you received a new mobile device, you will need to reactivate the Duo Mobile app. You can easily do so if you kept the same phone number as the old device and/or if you still have the old device with you. You can also reactivate the app as a troubleshooting step if your existing device suddenly stops receiving Duo notifications.

For the full instructions please visit Duo’s official documentation on reactivating Duo Mobile.

Renaming and Removing Devices

Renaming a device can be helpful when choosing which of your registered devices you’d like to use for authentication, especially if you have multiple devices of the same type. Removing a device that has been lost or stolen is an important step to ensuring your account remains secure. You can also remove old devices you no longer have to clean up your device list and make it easier to find the device you need.

  1. On the Duo prompt page, click “Other options”.
  2. Click the “Manage devices” option at the bottom of your device list.
  3. You will be asked to authenticate using a device you already have registered with Duo.
  4. Find the device you want to rename or remove, and click “Edit” in the top-right corner of the box.
  5. To rename:
    1. Click the “Rename” link.
    2. Edit the name in the device field.
    3. Click the “Rename” button.
  6. To Remove:
    1. Click the “Delete” link.
    2. Click the “Delete [device name]” button to verify you want to delete that device.
  7. When you are done renaming and/or removing devices, click the “Back to login” link at the top-right corner of the page.
